Skype Number and Skype Credit after Skype: what is left

Cập nhật ngày 14 tháng 10, 2026

Skype itself was retired on 5 May 2025, but its two paid parts lived on for a while. Skype Number subscriptions ended in May 2026, and Microsoft no longer accepts requests to port a Skype Number to another provider, so a number that was not moved in time is gone. Skype Credit you still hold can be used for calls to landlines and mobiles from the Skype Dial Pad, on calling.web.skype.com or inside Microsoft Teams Free, but you cannot buy more. Below is what is left of each, the dates Microsoft gives, and what to use instead.

What happened to Skype Numbers

Skype was retired on 5 May 2025. Calling and Skype Number subscriptions renewed automatically until 3 April 2025 and then stayed active until the end of the period already paid for. Until then, calls to a Skype Number rang in the Skype web portal, as long as the browser was open, and in Microsoft Teams Free through the Skype Dial Pad.

That period is over. Microsoft's support pages now say that all Skype Number subscriptions ended in May 2026 and that port-out requests are no longer available. They do not give the exact day. Subscriptions that ran beyond 1 May 2026 were cancelled and converted into Skype Credit; if you would rather have the money back, Microsoft says Skype customer support will refund them instead. Swedish Skype Numbers were switched off earlier, on 31 December 2025, because of regulatory changes, and Microsoft says their owners may be eligible for compensation in certain cases, such as a refund or vouchers for other Microsoft services, through customer support.

If your number was not ported before then, it cannot be moved now, and Microsoft's standard refund policy says Skype Numbers are not refunded. People who used to call you on it will need your new number.

What you can still do with Skype Credit

Skype Credit still pays for calls to landlines and mobile numbers through the Skype Dial Pad. Microsoft gives two places to find it: on the web at calling.web.skype.com, or by signing in to Microsoft Teams Free. If you have no active Skype Credit, the Skype Dial Pad does not appear. Microsoft does not give a date when remaining credit stops working.

The rules around it have narrowed:

  • You cannot buy more. New purchases of Skype Credit, Skype Numbers and Skype subscriptions are no longer available, and automatic top-up has ended.
  • Credit goes inactive after 180 days without use. You then have to reactivate it in My Account before the Skype Dial Pad shows up in Teams again.
  • Refunds are limited: under the standard policy, unused Skype Credit can be refunded if you ask within 14 days of buying it, and after that only at Skype's discretion for customers in the EU. Credit that replaced a subscription cancelled because it ran beyond 1 May 2026 is the exception: Microsoft says you can ask customer support for a refund instead.
  • Sending credit as a gift, SMS, call forwarding, voicemail and Caller ID setup stopped on 5 May 2025. Existing Caller ID setups were shut down on 15 February 2026, and Microsoft says it deletes any number connected to Caller ID.

Microsoft Teams Free is not a phone replacement

Microsoft points Skype users to Teams Free, but its own calls are between Teams users: one-to-one or group calls with up to 20 participants, started from your chats. Microsoft says Teams does not support paid calling plans on the free version. The only way to reach a phone number from Teams Free is the Skype Dial Pad, and only while you have Skype Credit.

Microsoft's Teams Free help pages describe no phone number of its own that people could call you on. Its business phone system, Teams Phone, is not available for consumer use.

Replacing a Skype Number

A Skype Number did two jobs: people could reach you on an ordinary phone number, and the calls rang on your computer. The services that do the same differ mainly in which countries they have numbers in:

  • Google Voice: the free personal service and the plans for individuals are available in the US only. Calls can be made from a web browser as well as from mobile devices. Businesses can get local Voice numbers through Google Workspace in 14 countries.
  • Quo, formerly OpenPhone: US and Canadian numbers only.
  • Browzerphone: you can rent a US or Canadian number, and calls to it ring in your browser wherever you are. The same account calls phone numbers in 216 countries.

Replacing Skype Credit

For calls out to phone numbers, what Skype Credit gave you was a pay-as-you-go dialer. Browzerphone works the same way in a browser tab on a laptop or desktop: you sign up, top up a prepaid balance and pay per minute while you talk, at the rates shown on the rates page, to phone numbers in 216 countries.

The first call of up to 60 seconds is free and needs no card, so you can check that the line connects before you pay. Premium-rate numbers are not covered by the free minute. If you still have Skype Credit, it makes sense to use it up in the Skype Dial Pad first: Microsoft gives no date when it stops working, and it goes inactive after 180 days without use.
