American Airlines international phone number: which one to call

AA's list of worldwide phone numbers gives local reservations numbers for many countries, with hours in local time; a few share a number, such as Turkey, which uses the UK line. Most lines in Europe answer in English 24 hours a day; some also have a local-language service with shorter hours.

The 800 numbers are listed under "Within the U.S. and Canada". From another country, use the number AA lists for the country you are in. AA notes that not all international calls are toll-free, that mobile rates may be higher, and that a service fee may apply to trips ticketed by its Reservations offices in some countries.

The US line answers with a voice assistant. After a recording notice, it says that if you booked through a travel agent or another third party, you should contact them, and then asks you to say in a few words what you are calling about, for example "change flight", "book a new reservation" or "flight status".

We stayed silent. The assistant asked twice more, then said "It seems like you're no longer there" and ended the call after about 1 minute 24 seconds.

On +44 20 7660 2300 our test call reached a keypad menu: 1 new flight reservation, 2 existing reservations, 3 AAdvantage, 4 web support, 5 travel agents, 6 baggage services, 9 to repeat. Star gives information on data protection.

Choose a key right away. When we pressed nothing, the menu played again and AA disconnected the call after about 70 seconds.

AA lists numbers for Africa, Asia and the South Pacific, the Caribbean, Europe, Latin America and the Middle East. Some of them, with hours in local time:

For any other country, check the worldwide phone numbers on aa.com. We tested only the US 800 number and the UK line.

Browzerphone dials US and UK numbers from a browser tab, with no SIM card and nothing to install, and shows the price per minute before you call; the rates page lists it per country. Our test calls went out through Browzerphone's US phone provider from a US (+1) number, so the call to 800-433-7300 was a call within the US. The keypad for the menu is in the same tab.

Without credit, Browzerphone only allows a free trial call, and it ends after one minute. A voice assistant and a queue take longer than that, so top up first if you need to reach an agent.
