Google Voice international calls: what to check before you dial
Përditësuar më 13 tetor 2026
Yes, Google Voice can call phone numbers in other countries. On an individual account, calls from the US to the US and Canada are almost all free; calls to anywhere else are paid per minute, and on the free personal account you pay for them with prepaid Google Voice credit. Personal Google Voice is only available in the US, a new number has to pass an identity check before it works, and Google can take back a number that has not been used for 3 months. Below is how the credit works, what changes when you are abroad, and when a browser dialer is the simpler option.
Who can use Google Voice for international calls
Google lists the free Google Voice service for personal Gmail accounts, and the Voice Starter and Voice Standard plans for individuals, as available in the US only. The free service also needs an existing phone number that your Voice calls can be forwarded to.
A new Google Voice number cannot make or receive calls or texts until its owner passes identity verification. You give your legal name and a government-issued ID; the answer is either instant or comes after a manual review that can take up to 3 business days.
Elsewhere, Google offers Google Voice to businesses as a Google Workspace add-on. Local numbers on Google's own calling plan are available in 14 countries: Belgium, Canada, Denmark, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, the Netherlands, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, the UK and the US.
How international calls are paid
When you call from the US, almost all Google Voice calls to the US and Canada are free. On individual accounts, calls to other countries are paid per minute: on the free personal account you buy Google Voice credit in advance, and each international call is taken from it at the per-minute rate listed on Google's calling rates page. With a paid Voice Starter or Voice Standard plan you cannot buy credit; international calls appear on the monthly invoice instead.
The credit comes with rules that are easy to miss:
- Your balance cannot be more than $70.
- Unless the law says otherwise, purchased credit expires 6 months from the last date you used it, and it cannot be transferred.
- Google's help pages say you can ask for a refund of calls and balances within 6 months of the original purchase. Its terms of service add that Google is not obliged to refund prepaid credit.
- If the account is inactive for long enough, the remaining balance is handed to a US state as unclaimed property, generally after 2 to 5 years. For people living outside the US it goes to Delaware.

Calling with Google Voice while you are abroad
Google's help pages describe calls to the US and Canada as free when you call from the US. When you travel, they warn that your mobile carrier can charge international calling rates and extra roaming fees, and that international calls use minutes from your mobile phone plan. To make calls without roaming, Google suggests Wi-Fi or mobile data.
In some places calling from Google Voice is not available at all: Crimea, Cuba, Iran, North Korea, Sudan and Syria. In India you can call other countries, but not numbers within India.
Numbers and calls Google Voice may refuse
Google keeps the right not to connect any telephone number, at its sole discretion. Its terms give certain geographic locations, special services numbers, satellite phone services and other call forwarding services as examples.
The Google Voice acceptable use policy also bans inflating call traffic, for example traffic pumping and international revenue share fraud. When Google finds a possible violation, it may limit or end the user's access to Google Voice.
Keeping your Google Voice number
Google may reclaim a Voice number that has not been used to place calls or send texts for 3 months. Before that happens you get a warning with a reclaim date. Making a call, sending a text from the number or listening to your voicemail before that date keeps it.
After the reclaim date you have 45 days to get the number back. Your messages stay in the account, but the number cannot receive calls or texts until you restore it. If you live abroad and keep a US number mainly for occasional international calls, put a reminder in your calendar.
When a browser dialer is simpler
If you are outside the US, have no US account, or only need to call a number in another country now and then, a browser dialer does the same job without a Google Voice number to keep alive. Browzerphone runs in a browser tab on a laptop or desktop and calls phone numbers in 216 countries.
You sign up, top up a prepaid balance and pay per minute while you talk, at the rates shown on the rates page. The first call of up to 60 seconds is free and needs no card, so you can check that the line connects before you pay. Premium-rate numbers are not covered by the free minute.

Can Google Voice call international numbers?
Yes. On an individual account, calls to the US and Canada are almost all free when you call from the US. Calls to other countries are charged per minute at the rates on Google's calling rates page: the free personal account pays for them with prepaid Google Voice credit, and the Voice Starter and Voice Standard plans put them on the monthly invoice.
Can I use Google Voice outside the US?
Free personal Google Voice and the Voice Starter and Voice Standard plans for individuals are available in the US only. Businesses can get local Google Voice numbers through Google Workspace in 14 countries. In Crimea, Cuba, Iran, North Korea, Sudan and Syria calling from Google Voice is not available, and in India it cannot call numbers within India.
Does Google Voice credit expire?
Yes. Unless the law says otherwise, Google's additional terms say purchased calling credit expires 6 months from the most recent date of use and cannot be transferred.
Are calls to the US free when I am abroad?
Google only describes calls to the US and Canada as free when you call from the US. Abroad, your mobile carrier can charge international rates and roaming fees, so Google suggests Wi-Fi or mobile data. Check your carrier's charges before a long call.
What happens to my Google Voice number if I stop using it?
Google may reclaim it after 3 months without calls or texts. You get a warning first, and a call, a text or listening to your voicemail before the reclaim date keeps the number. After that date you have 45 days to get it back.
Call 216 countries from your browser
No US number needed and nothing to install. Your first call of up to 60 seconds is free, then you pay per minute.
