How to call HMRC from abroad
Проверено тестовым звонком 13 октября 2026 г.Обновлено 19 октября 2026 г.
If you are outside the UK, dial the +44 number HMRC publishes for the helpline you need - for Self Assessment that is +44 161 931 9070 - not the 0300 number printed on your letter. HMRC lists a separate international number for Self Assessment, Income Tax, National Insurance, Child Benefit and VAT, all in the table below, and all six lines in it connected when we called them from Poland on 13 October 2026. On the Self Assessment line it took about five minutes of mostly spoken menus to reach the queue for an adviser, with a recent average wait of 20 minutes announced on top.

Why the 0300 number on your letter is not the one to dial
Every HMRC letter carries a 0300 helpline number. That number is written for people calling inside the UK, where an 03 number is charged at a UK-wide rate. From another country there is no UK national rate to apply - you are placing an international call, priced by whoever carries it.
HMRC handles this by publishing a second number for each helpline, in +44 form, under a heading for callers outside the UK. Those are the numbers in the table below, taken from the helpline pages on GOV.UK. Use the one that matches your question: the helplines are staffed by different teams, and the wrong line means a transfer or a second call.
GOV.UK is careful about what a call costs. Its call charges page says the published costs are approximate and asks you to check with your phone provider for the actual cost, particularly if you are calling from abroad. Check the price before you settle in for a long call.
What to have ready before you call
Advisers ask for identifying details before they discuss anything. Getting them together first saves the call being cut short.
- Your National Insurance number - HMRC asks for it on the Income Tax, National Insurance and Child Benefit lines.
- Your postcode and VAT registration number for VAT enquiries.
- The letter or notice you are calling about, so you can quote the reference printed on it.
- The dates and figures you want to ask about, written down - you will not be able to look them up mid-call if your records are on another device.
- The time difference. The lines run Monday to Friday during UK office hours and close on UK bank holidays, so work out what that means where you are before you dial.

How to dial an HMRC number from any country
The numbers in the table are already written in international form, so they are ready to use as they are. If your phone or your provider will not take the plus sign, replace it with the exit code of the country you are calling from.
- 1Start with a plus sign. On a mobile keypad, hold the 0 key until it turns into +. If you cannot enter +, use your country's international exit code instead - 00 across most of Europe, 011 from the US and Canada.
- 2Add 44, the country calling code for the United Kingdom.
- 3Add the rest of the number without its leading zero. A UK number written 0161 931 9070 becomes +44 161 931 9070.
- 4Check the opening hours against your own clock, then call.
How to avoid the queue
On our Self Assessment test calls it took about five minutes of automated menus to reach the queue for an adviser, and the system announced a recent average wait of 20 minutes on top of that, so set aside around half an hour. Most questions expect a spoken answer. On our call, the phrase "I need help completing my self assessment return" was recognised as help filling in a Self Assessment return. Once we confirmed it, one or two follow-up questions came, such as whether you are calling about your own tax (1 for yes, 2 for no). When it then reads out where to find help online and asks whether you would like to hear that information again, answer "no" to move on. Then came "please hold, and you will be connected to the next available advisor", followed by notices that calls are recorded, that you may be asked extra security questions and that you may be offered voice identification.
On the VAT helpline HMRC states that phone lines are less busy between 8:30am and 11am, which is the window to aim for.
Several things do not need a phone call at all. A Self Assessment repayment is one: the line's recorded message says to claim it online, because advisers cannot do it over the phone. HMRC's digital assistant answers common questions on the helpline pages and can pass you to an adviser on webchat if one is free. The HMRC app gives you your tax, National Insurance and benefit details on a phone, and your personal or business tax account lets you check and update your records online. For general queries HMRC also answers on X as @HMRCcustomers, Monday to Friday 8am to 8pm and Saturday 8am to 4pm.
One line in the table needs a note: tax credits ended on 5 April 2025 and no more payments are being made. The helpline is still published for questions about past awards, but there is no scheme left to claim.
Calling HMRC from your browser
Abroad without a UK SIM, a call to a +44 number is charged by your own network at whatever its international rate is. Browzerphone dials the same number from a browser tab instead: you pay per minute for the call, with no SIM card and nothing to install.
It runs on a laptop or a desktop, so you can keep your letters, your online account and the call in front of you at once. Check the per-minute rate to the United Kingdom before you call, so you know what the call costs before you place it.

Частые вопросы
What number do I call HMRC on from abroad?
The +44 number for the helpline you need. HMRC publishes one per line: Self Assessment on +44 161 931 9070, Income Tax and PAYE on +44 135 535 9022, National Insurance on +44 191 203 7010, Child Benefit on +44 161 210 3086 and VAT on +44 2920 501 261.
Can I call the 0300 number from outside the UK?
GOV.UK publishes the 0300 number for callers in the UK and a separate +44 number for callers outside it, so use the +44 one - it is the number HMRC lists for your situation. GOV.UK also asks you to check the actual cost with your phone provider, particularly when you are calling from abroad.
When are the HMRC helplines open?
Monday to Friday, 8am to 6pm on most lines, and 8am to 5pm for tax credits. They close on UK bank holidays. Work out the difference between UK office hours and your own time zone before you dial.
How long does it take to get through to the Self Assessment helpline?
On our test calls on 13 October 2026 it took about five minutes of automated menus to reach the queue for an adviser, and the system announced a recent average wait of 20 minutes on top of that. The announced figure is a recent average, so it can be different when you call: listen for it at the start of the call.
What do I need to have with me?
Your National Insurance number for Income Tax, National Insurance and Child Benefit; your postcode and VAT registration number for VAT; and the letter you are calling about, so you can quote the reference printed on it.
Is there a way to sort this out without calling?
Often, yes. HMRC's digital assistant answers common questions and can transfer you to an adviser on webchat, the HMRC app shows your tax, National Insurance and benefit details, and your personal or business tax account lets you check and update your records online.
