How to call Universal Credit from abroad
Gecontroleerd met een testgesprek op 20 oktober 2026Bijgewerkt op 20 oktober 2026
The Universal Credit helpline on GOV.UK is 0800 328 5644, and the page gives no separate number for calling from outside the UK. When we called it from Poland on 20 October 2026, during its opening hours, we got a busy signal straight away. GOV.UK names one other way to contact Universal Credit: your online account.

What number GOV.UK gives
On its "Contact Universal Credit" page, GOV.UK lists two ways to get in touch: through your online account, or by calling the Universal Credit helpline on 0800 328 5644, Monday to Friday, 8am to 6pm. The page names no time zone (presumably UK time) and says nothing about bank holidays.
The same page gives Relay UK (18001 then 0800 328 5644) if you cannot hear or speak on the phone, and a Welsh language line, also an 0800 number. If you live in Northern Ireland, GOV.UK sends you to the Universal Credit Service Centre instead.
There is no number on the page for callers outside the UK. Written for a call from abroad, the helpline becomes +44 800 328 5644: 44 for the United Kingdom, then the number without its first zero.
Our call from Poland got a busy signal
We dialled +44 800 328 5644 through Browzerphone from Poland on Tuesday 20 October 2026 at about 11:26am UK time, inside the opening hours GOV.UK gives. The call did not connect: it returned a busy signal at once, so there was nothing to record.
That is one call, from one country. We cannot say how the number behaves from other countries or other networks. What we can say is that UK 0800 numbers are often not reachable from abroad: other UK 0800 numbers we tried from Poland in earlier tests gave the same busy signal. Our guide to UK 0800 numbers from abroad has the details.
GOV.UK lists 0800 numbers as free from UK landlines and mobiles, and adds that its call costs are approximate: check with your phone provider for the actual cost, particularly if you are calling from abroad.
What to do instead
The only other route GOV.UK names on the contact page is your Universal Credit online account. It is the first way the page lists to contact Universal Credit, and it does not depend on a phone line.
- 1Sign in to your Universal Credit online account and contact Universal Credit there, as the GOV.UK contact page suggests.
- 2If you want to try the phone anyway, dial +44 800 328 5644 between 8am and 6pm UK time, Monday to Friday. If you hear a busy signal straight away, the line did not connect, as on our call.
- 3If you live in Northern Ireland, use the Universal Credit Service Centre that GOV.UK points you to.
Calling from a browser
Browzerphone dials UK numbers from a browser tab, with no SIM card and nothing to install, and shows the per-minute rate before you call. For this helpline it did not help in our test: the 0800 number returned a busy signal.
Without credit you get one free trial call that ends after one minute. By default the call shows a shared number, not your own, so do not count on a call-back to the number displayed.
