How to call DVLA from abroad
Sinubukan sa test call noong Oktubre 13, 2026In-update noong Oktubre 19, 2026
DVLA does not publish a separate number for callers outside the UK: you dial the same lines as everyone else, +44 300 790 6801 for driving licences, +44 300 790 6802 for vehicle tax, SORN and log books, and +44 300 790 6806 for medical questions. All three connected when we called them from Poland on 13 October 2026, and the driving licence line put us in the queue for an adviser after about 2 minutes 40 seconds. Before you call, check that your application has passed its processing time: DVLA asks you to wait before contacting them.

Para sa iyo:In this first menu, 2 is for a medical condition or licence renewal and 3 for a vehicle or trailer; in the department menu below they swap. On another call we pressed nothing here and were put through to the driving licence department after about 1 minute 25 seconds anyway.

Which DVLA line to call
DVLA splits its phone contact by subject, and the contact service on GOV.UK routes you to one of three lines. Driving Licence Enquiries, 0300 790 6801, covers licence applications, renewals, replacements, name and address changes. Vehicle Enquiries, 0300 790 6802, covers vehicle tax, Statutory Off Road Notification (SORN), vehicle registration and V5C log books. Medical Enquiries, 0300 790 6806, is for driving and medical issues.
All three keep the same hours: Monday to Friday, 8am to 7pm, and Saturday, 8am to 2pm. Those are UK local times, so convert them to your own clock before you dial - a Saturday morning call from Sydney, for example, lands well after the line has closed.
If you hold a Northern Ireland driving licence, DVLA is the wrong agency: licence questions go to the Driver and Vehicle Agency instead.
Wait for the processing time first
DVLA asks you not to contact them until an application has passed its published processing time, and the times differ by subject. A driving licence application takes 2 weeks online or 3 weeks by post, and can take longer if DVLA needs to check your identity or medical details. A SORN confirmation by telephone takes 4 weeks, a vehicle tax refund by telephone or online 6 weeks, and any DVLA application by post 6 to 8 weeks.
For log books applied for online: a duplicate takes 2 weeks, and a change of address, change of registered keeper or confirmation you have sold your vehicle each take 4 weeks. If your log book has not arrived after 6 weeks and you have not told DVLA, a replacement costs £25.
Ringing before those times are up is the most common wasted call from abroad. Before you dial, check the date on your application against the table for your subject and, where there is an online tracking service, look there first.

Routes that do not need a phone at all
Every DVLA subject above also has a webchat service and an email service, reachable from the contact pages on GOV.UK. From another country these are often the easiest route, because they do not depend on opening hours matching your time zone. Some subjects - driving licences, vehicle tax and SORN, log books - additionally have a WhatsApp channel; the medical pages do not.
WhatsApp has limits DVLA spells out: you cannot call DVLA through it, make a payment, set up a Direct Debit, ask about medical issues or order a new licence - for those, use the phone, webchat or email route published for that subject.
How to dial a DVLA 0300 number from abroad
DVLA numbers start with 0300, which is a UK-wide number. From outside the UK you dial it like any other UK number: drop the leading zero and put the country code in front.
- 1Have your details ready - your driving licence number, vehicle registration or the reference from your application, and the date you sent it.
- 2Start with a plus sign, or your country's exit code if the plus will not work: 00 across most of Europe, 011 from the US and Canada.
- 3Add 44 for the United Kingdom, then the number without its leading zero: +44 300 790 6801 for licences, +44 300 790 6802 for vehicles, +44 300 790 6806 for medical questions.
- 4Check the time in the UK before you ring.
Calling from a browser
GOV.UK lists 030 numbers at up to 10p a minute from UK landlines and 3p to 40p from UK mobiles - but those are UK rates and say nothing about what your network abroad charges to reach them. Browzerphone dials the same +44 number from a browser tab, charged per minute at the rate for the United Kingdom, with no SIM card and nothing installed.
On a laptop you can keep your licence or V5C details open next to the call. Check the per-minute rate to the United Kingdom first, so there are no surprises on a longer wait.

Mga madalas itanong
What is the DVLA phone number from outside the UK?
There is no separate international number. Dial the regular lines with the UK country code: +44 300 790 6801 for driving licences, +44 300 790 6802 for vehicle tax, SORN and log books, +44 300 790 6806 for medical questions.
When are the DVLA lines open?
Monday to Friday, 8am to 7pm, and Saturday, 8am to 2pm, UK local time. Convert those hours to your own time zone before you call.
Can I contact DVLA without calling?
Yes. Every subject has a webchat service and an email service, linked from the DVLA contact pages on GOV.UK, and some also have a WhatsApp channel. WhatsApp cannot be used to call DVLA, make a payment, set up a Direct Debit, ask about medical issues or order a new licence.
How long should I wait before contacting DVLA about my application?
DVLA asks you to wait for the processing time: 2 weeks for a licence applied for online, 3 weeks by post; 4 weeks for a SORN confirmation by phone; 6 weeks for a vehicle tax refund; 6 to 8 weeks for any application by post; 2 weeks for a duplicate log book online and 4 weeks for a log book change of address, keeper or sale confirmation.
How long does it take to get through to DVLA?
On our test call to the driving licence line on Tuesday 13 October 2026, at about 5:50pm UK time, it took about 2 minutes 40 seconds of menus to reach the queue for an adviser. The medical line announced waits of up to 20 minutes that day and pointed to webchat, where waits are shorter.
I have a Northern Ireland licence - do I call DVLA?
No. Northern Ireland driving licences are handled by the Driver and Vehicle Agency, not DVLA.
